"Hmmm? Wait! No-no-no-no-no-stop!"

Meru had paused, face going curious as her eyes went wide; it was a look Al knew well enough. Almost too well, even…

The predicted rain had long since fallen, not stopping them and the others who chose to walk the streets of New York to go hither and yonder; the city rejoiced the end of the long drought at long last. Evening fell when the couple decided to make their way back home, where the animals were surely waiting for them, when they, or rather Meru, noticed the object.

Left out on the street, almost hidden by the darkness, was a cardboard box, looking large enough to fit a small TV. He wouldn't have paid it too much thought, but the box was shuffling-something alive was still inside.

The drummer ran forward; the other held the purple umbrella over her head as he followed behind. He was now wishing he brought the larger one, used when walking Henry and/or Kuru, as he was now starting to get soaked, but the smaller's less room meant more cuddling. There also had been no original plan of finding moving cardboard boxes in the middle of the sidewalks.

"Oh my-!" Meru squealed, loudly: five kittens of various colors peered at the two musicians, mewing softly. They must've been out for a while; at least, long enough for the box to get soaked, and getting the small cats wet as well.

Al couldn't help a grin; they were adorable, and he knew Meru would want to take them home. He steadied the umbrella, trying his hardest to keep her and the kittens as dry as possible. Although this meant having no protection from the rain still; his clothing was starting to stick. "We should get the box back-"

But the female paid no attention, instead lifting an orange kitty and setting it on her shoulder. "Look at you! Poor things-we'll get you in a good home!"

"Meru-" But she reached for a second kitty: tan, with a brown patch around his left eye, tucking it safely under her arm. Sighing, now sure the original joy of seeing the cats was gone from his face, he shifted the umbrella again. "Meru, it'd be a lot easier to take the box-"

"What happened-that your owners would abandon you!" She reached for the third, brown; now the remaining two were looking at her. She was laughing, however, when one decided to reach up and play with the rope that served as a belt. "Awww, you think it's a toy!? So cute!" Enjoying the kitties, she looked unaware of what was going on around her.

He was sure his face fell at this point; now his hair was starting to stick to his face. It wasn't, at least, he tried to tell himself this, that she was paying so much attention to the kittens; she loved them immensely. But the rain was picking up, the small umbrella could only offer shelter to her, and getting completely drenched was not fun. "Meru, just put them in the box; we can-"

She turned, finally, and started laughing again. "Aren't you such the gentleman?" She tugged his arm, pulling him closer. "You don't need to soak yourself to keep me dry, silly! Here." The drummer carefully set the two kittens in her arms on his shoulders. They blinked, mewed, and settled; despite the fact his coat was drenched. "There; I'll carry the other two. Now we don't need the box."

"And we can resume cuddling?"

Meru tucked the final two baby cats as she had the second one, turned, and shook her head. "You're drenched! I don't want to get too wet." Al chose to roll his eyes and pull her close anyway, surprising her. "Wha-no! Al, that's not fair!"

That earned a laugh, and he leaned forward to kiss her. "How about that?"

Seeing that her three charges were secure, she looped her free arm around his waist, cuddling closer. "That's fair."

The male musician shifted the umbrella, trying to keep them all dry without bothering the kitten on his right shoulder. When seeing that all five were comfortable, the couple continued for home.

I made a commission from *Black-Cat-Virus, and was pleasantly surprised (as Gancena can testify to) to see it in my inbox last night. Commission link here: [link]

IF YOU ARE A SS READER, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? GO. GO NOW.

The title of this is the same title as the comm, because, as I was going to sleep, my brain goes "NOOOOOOOOOOOO ONESHOT IDEA ONESHOT IDEA WRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITE! DDDDDDDDD:"

So I did. This is the result.

We ARE in Shooting Star canon, however. Where, when, how, why...? I will not say. All I will say is that the animals seem to indicate it's later on in the series.

Enjoy!

I LOVE KITTIES RAAAAA

I'd do the same thing though. Hell, I have. That's kind of not really how I ended up with Snort.

Nyaaaa :3 Your writing is nice, it's descriptive but not overloaded. I like it. :dummy:
